Pewter knotwork design hairslide containing a large turquoise cabochon with rosewood pin.

This hairslide has been made by being cast into a rubber mould and then carefully hand-worked and polished. The rose wood pin on the back holds the hair tightly to prevent the hairslide from slipping out.Hairslides with a wooden pin require a thicker mass of hair to be effective but once pushed in remain very secure.
The Celts used knotwork to decorate many of their artifacts. To them, the intricate patterns woven into spirals and knots symbolise the continuity of life. The vibrant blue stone turquoise is considered sacred by many cultures. It gives courage, fulfilment and success. Turquoise is also said to represent strength and power and is a good conductor for healing. The substance has been known by many names, but the word turquoise was derived around 16th century from the French language either from the word for Turkish (Turquois) or dark-blue stone (pierre turquin).
